Very pleasant seeing my favorite Kugimiya tsundere again, especially after seeing my least favorite win a certain tournament.
Whoo! OVA! We got Shana, Yuji, and Alastor, and that’s all I remembered about the series in the first few minutes. Reason being is because it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen the first season, annnd I haven’t even finished the second. Yes, I suddenly recalled midway through the episode that I gave up about 8 episodes into the second season, because quite honestly, it was boring. Thankfully this first part of the OVA just had that comedic air that most re-introductory episodes do for a series that had been on hiatus. So it was left for me to get reacquainted with the rest of the cast and technical terms like “Flame haze” and what have you.
On a treasure hunt for an artifact not thoroughly explained, Yuji unwittingly causes a body switch with Shana by looking through a telescope (which Alastor dubs “Reshuffle”) . Hilarity is supposed to ensue. At this point I expected tons of fanservice, because a scenario like that just begs for it, and I have an odd habit of gauging anime by their doujinshi potential. Thankfully, the fanservice is kept at a minimum. They get over the fact that their minds are now in the other’s body rather quickly, not much of a fuss with anatomy, and they go on their merry way onto reversing this effect. However, no one else can know what transpired, so they have to find a place to do it in secret. Along the way, the audience gets reintroduced to Yuji’s mom, “those two guys”, Alcoholic lady w/talking book, combat maid, classmates including Yuji’s bro and that meddlesome girl. Episode concludes with the usual, near(“oh my good I shouldn’t do this while in this situation”) kiss, and Alastor hints at a deeper relationship between Yuji and Shana (as if I didn’t know already).
Should it be considered incestous to kiss yourself while in another's body?
By episode’s end I remembered everything I knew about Shakugan no Shana, characters, terminology–> good memory jog.
I see and I am satisfied that my Shana x Yuji ship is very much intact and operational, everything is good. I foresee bad news on the horizon for me because the 3rd season is in the works and it looks like it’s time for me to finish what I started many moons ago. Painful process: what I’ve seen of SnS 2nd was boring as previously stated and the love-pentagon was killing me.
