Umineko no Naku Koro ni – First Impressions: You call this a family?!

Applause to Umineko no Naku Koro ni for being able to invoke a lot of reactions out of me. Then again, I did say back then that this show has potentially interesting stuff, which makes it nothing more than something within my expectations.

First up is a rather ominous (courtesy of the occult choir singing along) yet enchanting OP sequence. Wait…did I just say enchanting?! Oh yea, definitely. I mean what’s not to be enchanted about when you have glowing orange butterflies flying around all over the place, on top of crimson clocks that reminds me a lot of Pandora Hearts for obvious reasons and an eerie portrait de Petit Cossette of what is later known to be a witch? If that doesn’t cut it, perhaps this screencap will change your mind. Okay fine…maybe it’s more bewitching than enchanted…but you get the point.

As far as the plot goes, the one thing that comes immediately to my mind is how this show contrasts the rather darker side of human nature (as portrayed by the ‘adults’) with the carefree naivete of the children. Another thing that comes to mind is how the characters are conveniently relatives with one another, how the head of a clan is a power-hungry old man and how everything supernatural focuses on a particular witch otherwise known as Beatrice. Wait a minute, haven’t we seen this setup before? That’s right! Old man Ushiromiya could be thought as old man Emperor Charles Zi Britannia, Battler can be thought of as Lelouch, and Beatrice as C.C! Right? RIIIIGHT?!Wrong!!!!!!!

If it were to come to that, I would immediately dismiss this show on the premise of boring repeats (or Code Geass ripoff); but thank goodness that’s not the case. One particular thing I’ve noticed from some people is how they’ve come to despise Ushiromiya Maria, or rather, her incessant mannerism of saying Uuuu for 99% of her air time’s entirety. Honestly, I don’t blame them, though I thought it was pretty cute at first…up until the time where her mother had to smack her silly. Allow me to ruin your day by spamming you with UUUUUUUUUs. Thanks to LadyMariaSan for the upload. I had the feeling somebody was going to upload it…turns out I was right.

Did anyone notice the conflict between how her mouth says something while her voice says something entirely different?

Not to worry raging fans! Pretty soon, those ‘Uuuus’ will be replaced by ‘Uuuuuu My GAWD SHE’S GOING TO KILL US,’ well at least from what I can make of her from the OP sequence anyway; remember the picture of her earlier? It looks as if she’s going to do some fckingsrspwnage.
