Seeing as to how the season finale (or probably the the entirety of the season) of K-ON! has been greeted with many negative reactions, it’s rather interesting how and why these naysayers have gone through so much trouble to watch this all up to the very last episode. But that’s okay…the question need not be answered for now since that’s not where I’m trying to get at.
Well actually now that I thinking about it, I’m kind of wondering why I’ve been watching K-ON all this time. I mean it’s not that epic good, the animation quality does have some conspicuous flaws, and there’s an excessive redundancy to the use of puns/gags. So why?! Is it because I didn’t exactly watch K-ON! for the same reasons as a good majority of others have? I don’t know…you tell me. Then again, it’s not that hard to figure out really. It’s because…
K-ON! isn’t…
1. Your essential source of Vitamin Moe – A lot of people I interact with who despise K-ON! blame their negativity towards the series to the overreacting moe fanboys (and in some cases, fangirls) who don’t have anything better to say other than..ZOMG MIOOOOOOOOOOOOOO or ZOMG AZUS-NYAAAAAAAN or anything else of that nature. Then again, I really can’t blame them entirely either considering how K-ON! tries so hard to emphasize moe (especially the “Moe moe kyun”). But really….it’s as if that’s the only reason we watch it.
2. Lucky Star – I must have been living under a rock not to make a correlation between K-ON! and Lucky Star. I mean sure, they’re both made by KyoAni and that both have four school girls as main characters. But other than that, I don’t see any further reason to compare the two. In fact it’s not even comparing that I’m seeing…it’s more like K-ON! sucks because it doesn’t have this <insert Lucky Star exclusive quality here> that Lucky Star has.
…and that K-ON! is just…
your unusual slice of life that doesn’t necessarily need to have a good badass storyline nor a consistency in style of its humor. I mean it wasn’t awesomely good..but it wasn’t THAT bad either…yet most of the people out there act as if it’s the most disgusting thing they’ve ever seen. Really, I don’t think this is a kind of show that one should take with all seriousness. Jeezuz….
As for me, all that really mattered the most was that K-ON served as a light entertainment (as well as a contrast to a lot more serious shows) throughout the Spring season. So unless you aren’t watching K-ON for the right reasons, chances are, you’re going to cast a FAIL spell on it….at least that’s what I think anyway.

Right on the money there.
It’s a little perplexing to me to see K-ON get criticized for not being more than it tried to be – an entertaining slice of life. It never sold itself as this profound show or a slice of life that was gonna shake up the world of slice of lifes. It’s just a fun show with a moe aesthetic that you can feel good about watching.

Awesome. It’s good to know you feel the same way.
But yeah…you know how people are. There’s always going to be somebody who does hate/rage and a couple more who will follow them because of the bandwagon and all. K-ON! just happens to be this season’s scapegoat.
Im sick of those people who keeps on comparing K-ON! to Lucky Star.
I like K-ON for what it is. The characters have their own characterization that may have some similarities with characters from previous anime by KyoAni. But that is all about the similarities.
Anyway, it is quite rare for me to have no particular girl to favor in an anime, but K-ON! is one example of such. I like how the girls interact with each other more than any particular girl in the group.
Wow. I never really liked K-On! I thought it was kind of stupid when I saw the first episode(please don’t kill me K-On! fans). It is kinda like Lucky Star(I didn’t like Lucky Star in the beginning either). I mean Lucky Star has no basic plot at all, which makes it so good. K-On! has a basic plot, but it’s too random like Lucky Star making it not so good(don’t kill me). I do understand how people fangirl over K-On!’s Mio. When I saw the first episode, even me, a non- K-On! loving fan, loved Mio. But I never really understood how animes like K-On! and Lucky Star have so many fans. The plot isn’t exactly that good. Maybe it’s the randomness of how the anime is aired. Who knows?

K-On = K-Off………….Massive FAIL!
(Please excuse the messy comment)
Even though I haven’t finished watching the series, it wasn’t a bad anime, like you said. And it’s true, it’s just light entertainment. The thing I like about it is that you don’t have to really think or worry about being lost when you watch it. Being a slice-of-life, you can watch from any episode and just enjoy the fluffyness. I don’t think it deserves as much negative reaction as it gets, since it’s just being what it’s supposed to be, a slice-of-life. And you can’t really expect much plot into it. And it’s nothing original either >_>. But being what it is, it’s like you said, it’s a nice contrast to the more serious shows this season. True, there is nothing special about it, but not terrible enough to get so much negative reaction.
And true, K-On was meant to be moe, so I guess we’d have to expect some overreacting fans. But those fans can make me want to turn away from the anime. Probably why I didn’t enthusiastically dive into the series.
Ah, slice of life, 4 high school girls, KyoAni, people would immediately think Lucky Star. So there really isn’t a stop to that. ^^;;
Hopefully that makes some sort of sense~
They wanted more LS so badly, they started to see it everywhere. K-On! is far from the only show people did LS comparisons with; it’s just that those comparisons seemed more valid, for all the reasons you listed above.
For the first two episodes I had to keep on shaking Kagami out of my eyes when I saw Mio. I think it was because they had the same style of eyes, I dunno. It was an entertaining series, but I didn’t love it exactly, just one of those shows, which I think has been the general consensus. Though I’m in love with the Ed, I’m afraid to admit the want for another season because it would mean another slick ED
for me
i enjoyed the show
that’s why i watched it till the end
i don’t know for others
o, i remember the word conformist
I just watched it for light entertainment and really</em enjoyed it, but I'm not going to go "ZOMG K-ON <33 GTFO YOU BASTARDS" to anyone that doesn't like it.
Then again, I'm a Haruhi fanboy so my opinion is invalid. x_x
