Oz Bezarius…for those of you who didn’t know, he’s the main character of Pandora Hearts, which is probably the only series this spring that gives me a thrill in each and every episode. At first, I thought the one thing that kept me interested in this series was the fact it heavily relies on allusions (more specifically, allusions to Alice in Wonderland and Pandora’s Box) until I came about the last couple of episodes when I realized how very very cool (to the highest degree) Oz was (and still is). Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of Oz Bezarius fandom going on across the interwebs, making this post a necessity.

So why Oz out of all characters in the ‘sphere I could have chosen? Well, there’s a couple of things – one of which being how he appears to be very smart for his age. Actually, calling him ‘smart’ would be inaccurate; the more appropriate word would be ‘intellectual’. I’ve seen two instances of his intellect in action. The first one was shortly after he got out of the abyss with Alice when he threatened to make Pandora his enemies if Break did not stop hitting Alice. Of course, Oz was able to do so thanks to his attentiveness to details (overhearing how he’s of importance to Pandora from Sharon and Emily), which he used to somewhat turn the tables. There’s also one involving Raven. While I’m not so sure if Oz was for real when he said he believed Raven (who was under the control Zwei) would be able to stop himself from killing him, I can be at least sure that he was able to see through Raven’s ‘tough front’, saying that aside from his physical changes and the fact that he’s now able to wield a gun, he really didn’t change much. That’s a lot of wits he has there.

Yet wit is one of the many things I idolize about him. There are a lot smart/scheming/intellectual characters out there, but only a few of them actually commands authority not by forceful authority, but instead by compassion. It’s almost oxymoronical to consider how to to enforce your authority onto others without actualy enforcing, but Oz was able to pull it off anyway (emphasis on Gil/Raven) and that in itself is a feat. Yet ironically, the one trait of Oz that I like so much is anything but a feat; it is instead a…erm…well, I wouldn’t call it a disorder; but it’s about his tendency to get attracted to and flirt with cute girls. And by girls I don’t mean just Sharon and a certain someone[annote="Alice"], but also one-timer characters like that girl who got dragged to Abyss because of the clock tatoo’s complete revolution. While I find this habit of his amusing, I also happen to find it very cool not to mention how it induces a gentleman-like behavior out of him -you have to give him points for that.

And now, brace yourself for screenshots!

Oz’ type is sure a very rare stereotype, I would even say almost unique. The calmly thinking aristocrat is something I have only seen in a couple of books. One of them from my early childhood, am not sure by whom it was written, and one of course the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett (there it was Lord Vetinari).

I am a fan as well.

Not enough love from the fandom? Man, you haven’t been hanging around in the right places. You’ll find that no one in the Pandora fandom rightfully hates him (if at all). He’s just cool like that. ♥

I agree, Oz is just awesomeness. X3
And no, this ain’t a biased comment comming from a girl who overall likes him, but because his attitude is to look up on. Wait, rephrase that, just like you said, he acts mature and thinks with an optimistic feel. But then, it’s not all that… ;)

Most people who likes Pandora Hearts loves Oz. precisely because of his quirky intelligence and cunning esp in the way he manipulates a situation to his advantage. Break often realizes this after a situation has concluded and not before. It amuses me much. He’s a fun character to watch.

You surely do idolise him much, don’t you? Sorry, idiotic ritorical questions don’t deserve an answer!

Well, I agree with with, at least mostly if not absolutely! Oz always appears to be kind of ‘wiser’ than other kids of his age, or even of people much older than him. He can see through things, and that ability makes him irrisistible and challenging. Especially when Gil/Raven comes up, Oz knows him like the palm of his hand and can manipulate him and take care of his heart at the same time. He’s a real friend and companion to Gil/Raven and wise enough to accept that amongst the years many things happened, but acknowledge that the inner personality hasn’t changed even a little bit…

I like Oz very much and I’m a bit surprised that it’s mostly all about Gil/Raven they’re all talking about, but maybe it’s because Oz is 15 and Gil/Raven 25. It must be a matter of age!

Ok, nice to see your thoughts about it! See ya!

P.S.: I use both named for Gil/Raven ’cause I can’t accept deviding the two different personas, Gil-’the childhood friend’ and Raven-’the dark older self’…

YAY! Another Oz fan~! <3

I pretty much agree with most of the reasons you listed for liking Oz. But it’s not only the good qualities of his character on why I like him so much or the fact that he doesn’t seem to be appreciated as much as Gil/Raven and Alice are…and I tend to like characters who are rather under-loved but that’s beside the point.

I’ll try to refrain from spoiling if you haven’t read or caught up with the manga but Oz has the potential to be a…not mortally flawed but reasonably flawed character (due to his childhood, which was heavily responsible to how he is now) and I find myself being drawn to those types a lot. He’s a good balance between a person you can’t help but like and a kid you can sympathize for.

Oh, haha, and I find his flirtatious trait really amusing as well. And it isn’t over the top like Tamaki from Ouran which makes me like him more and Tamaki less. :)
