Hey Alicia, what big eyes you have. It’s true; right off the start of the episode (or right all the way from the previews), I knew there was something strikingly different between how the animation is in the series and how it is on its video game counterpart.
I mean sure…I’m well aware there are expected difference in graphics; but putting that aside, I felt there was something else different. I realized that the characters in the anime were a bit ‘fatter’ than the ones in the video game, no offense. Taking a closer look, I also found out that their eyes were a bit bigger, if not exaggerated. I know, I know…I’ll stop with the muckraking.
As for the episode in its entirety, I can say it was very well put! I love the fact that the series’ introduction was put forward in motion by mostly by dramatic irony. Even more impressive was the fact that the episode was able to do this while sticking closely to the plot set by the video game, which by the way I haven’t finished yet T_T. That said, you can bet you’ll immediately see some striking differences between the anime and the game. One such example was the instance of having two young lads, Jan and Miguro if I’m not mistaken, take the place of much more mature watchmen as how it was in the game. But the fact that these minor changes did more help than harm, if were any at all, is more of a reason to use them throughout the entirety of the series. To be quite honest, I really think it is because of these slight modifications that made the episode quite amusing. I mean, seeing Welkin arrested was mundane since it was expected; but seeing Welkin arrested and comically accused, harassed, arrested, and then constantly harassed some more was for the lolz.
On a slightly different note, I was kind of surprised while at the same time pleased to hear the tunes of the game employed in the episode – I myself am fond of two of them. Now now, I have no idea what it’s called since I only get to hear it in the game but if you’re curious, one of them is played around the scene where Welkin was making way from Alicia’s captivity. The other one would be around the pair’s encounter with the Imperial soldiers. Oh my bad, did I say tunes? I meant to say tunes and sound effects. If you’ve ever played the game, you’ll find out that the sounds the rifles make (even the sound the sound of the bullets ricocheting) is strikingly similar to the ones you’ll hear in the game. Talk about recycling stuff.
Oh nothing really…just playing bondage with the children…
Anyways, I had high hopes for this series…and I’m glad to say that my expectations have been fulfilled so far. I really didn’t expect to see any of the 7s (Squad 7 members, woot!) until right after episode 2, but heck…I don’t mind seeing one of my favorite characters, Susie, this early! I am soo going to enjoy watching this.
