First of all, I would like to express my praise to the creators of K-ON! for being F*CKING GENIUSES!
Just thinking about how the Ritsu, Tsumugi and Mio were able to somehow drag the helpless Yui along their seemingly hopeless club is so mind-boggling, it almost gives me the chills! I mean, we start with Yui who doesn’t really look promising as a lead guitarist (at least not as we’ve seen on the promo pics anyway). Considering this in addition to the fact that the she didn’t become aware of the music club until the latter half of the episode, I was on a thinking train trying to figure out how they’ll connect the dots from “Yui” to “Light Music Club” in the most seamless manner possible. And goddamn, K-ON! actually pulled it off; they managed to go from one context to the next as such that I didn’t even realize Yui’s (unofficial) enlistment to the band until much later! Nice one, Kyo-Ani.
So let’s head over to the loli moe girls. Just as expected from Kyo-Ani, the girls themselves are a colorful bunch of characters! So, just for a quick rundown…we have Yui as the clumsy childish air-head who’s supposed to be the main protagonist; Ritsu who seems to be the prominent drama queen at the moment; Tsumugi whose classy style reflects even on her choice of instrument…the keyboard/piano; and finally, the seemingly most mature of them all (as well everybody’s apparent favorite), Mio. With a bunch as exciting as this, there’s no telling what will they be up to in the upcoming episodes! So yes, I am quite amused. I’ll be even more amused if I get the same feel I had while watching Suzuiya perform ‘God Knows’ when these girls ever get organized enough for a band. Now that’s something to look forward to!
It wax actually a Deux Ex Machina-drugged drink that made Yui join
As far as the plot goes, all that was ever accomplished was the club’s salvation through Yui’s admittance to the Light Music Club. There’s nothing really else to say, which is okay since it’s only the first episode. If there’s anything worth mentioning, it’s the different ways the pre-existing club members were trying so hard to bribe Yui to join…talk about a high lolz factor.
On another note, I felt sort of nostalgic about this series. I mean, come on…a nearly failed school club, a clumsy moe protagonist, and a Kyo-Ani production?! If you have no idea what I’m referring to, I suggest you buy yourself a trout and slap yourself with it.
And oh yea, the OP and ED was certainly moe-licious (especially the ED).
